What is it?
The knee is a complex joint between the thigh bone, two shin bones and the kneecap. There are 4 main ligaments that can be sprained, and a variety of muscles in the area. The knee is also one of the most common joints affected by osteoarthritis. At times knee pain can develop that is does not fit into any of these categories. The most common causes of generalized pain is named Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. In common language this means that pain has developed in the joint between the thigh bone and kneecap. If you are not certain what is the cause of the knee pain, book an appointment with your medical professional for a diagnosis.
What Can Be Done?
Repeated studies have demonstrated that strengthening and correcting movement patterns is a critical first step in treating knee pain. This can be combined with modalities, acupuncture and taping to reduce pain and inflammation in the joint. Massage can also be used to relieve tight and sore muscles. For some cases, particularly advanced osteoarthritis, tissue injections or PRP can be a helpful solution.
