The most common injury from a car accident is whiplash. This injury is caused by the head falling forward on impact, then whipping back as the car come to a sudden stop. Although a proper placed head rest and airbags have reduced the severity of whiplash over the last few years, it can still cause pain and disability. Often the neck is stiff and painful. Headaches are also common. At times, there can be tingling and numbness in the hand. It is always a good idea to go the emergency room if there is pain immediately following an accident.
What Can be Done?
Treatment for whiplash will involve gently moving the neck through a technique called mobilizations. It has been shown that the earlier you have this technique done the quicker you will recover and get back to your life. Even if you are in pain, there are things that can be done including heat, massage and gentle stretching that will reduce pain and make treatment tolerable. Exercises to strengthen the neck and shoulders are done when tolerated to regain strength and minimize muscle damage. Often, massage therapy is suggested as well. Together physiotherapy or chiropractor with massage is a great combination to put the injury behind you.
