Initially adapted from technology used to treat kidney stones, Shockwave is a relatively new and effective method of treating chronic soft tissue injuries. Radial Shockwave are high energy sound waves that transmit through the skin and spread outward to the underlying tissues. Research believes that it increases blood flow and metabolic activity in the area. This increases healing and decreases pain. It is proven effective in treating plantar fasciitis and chronic tendon issues such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and rotator cuff injuries.
What can you expect? Your therapist will examine the area to make sure that Shockwave is a good option for you. You will then be positioned comfortably with the sore tendons on a slight stretch. The shockwave is then applied with a hand-held applicator to the tender area. There can be some deep pain during the application, but the intensity of the wave can be controlled. Some tenderness is also a good indication that the waves are being targeted correctly. Although Shockwave can be used up to 5 times, the average for most clients is 2.2 applications. Most applications are spaced 7-10 days apart to allow for healing and recovery between doses.
